Welcome to The Prop Building Guidebook contest!
We are hosting this contest to celebrate the skill of Prop Builders everywhere and the release of Eric Hart's new book, The Prop Building Guidebook: For Theatre, Film, and TV!
Props and Prop Builders are pivotal to any theatre, live entertainment, film, or television production. Want proof!? Just think of the thousands of famous props out there that really made a story come alive – the light sabre from Star Wars, the chandelier in Phantom of the Opera, the Bat Mobile in Batman, the shark in Jaws, just to name a few.
Help us celebrate, share your talent, and get some recognition for your hard work by uploading a picture or video of a prop you built! You could win a prize package worth USD $500! Click on the Prizes tab below for a list.
Drumroll please! The winners are...
This was a challenging category just because it had so many entries. Even after narrowing it down, the remainders were still strong in different ways. I chose "1929 Bicycle - Stop Motion Animation." It had a very creative use of materials, it overcame some interesting challenges, the result was very high quality, and the presentation was fantastic.

Though this category was smaller, it had a number of nearly equally strong entries. After a long time of going back and forth between a few, I decided "Flintlock Pistol" was the winner. Besides being well-built and nicely presented, he used a teaspoon as the trigger guard which really pushed this prop to the top.

This category was actually tricky because it had so few entries. However, "19th Century Barbershop Chair for Sweeney Todd" was a clear winner.

Winner of the popular vote
It also looks like Chainsaw Hand had the most votes, which is cool. I loved their video.

Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to everyone who entered. I hope you have enjoyed this contest as much as we have!

The Prop Building Guidebook: For Theatre, Film, and TV lays the groundwork for an artisan to determine what materials and techniques to use to build any prop. With an explanation of how the craft and its products have developed over time, you will understand not just how and when to use certain techniques or materials, but also why to use them and what advantages they give.
Rosco Laboratories Inc. is a world-wide manufacturer of products for the entertainment industry. The company headquarters is located in Stamford, CT with additional facilities in Hollywood, Toronto, London, Madrid, São Paulo, Sydney and Mexico. Founded in Brooklyn, NY in 1910, Rosco has literally been coloring light for over a century. Rosco's product range includes color filters, gobos, scenic paint products, fog systems and dance floors.
Rosco's CrystalGel is a non-toxic, water-based material which provides a clear, plastic-like coating on virtually any surface used in modern stagecraft. It air dries quickly - usually within hours - to a flexible, translucent surface. When dry, it can be painted with any Rosco scenic paint, or carved, or safely rolled without cracking, peeling, or sticking. Such products as sand, sawdust or powdered clay can be added to it to create unique textures. CrystalGel is a styrene resin, providing the greatest adhesion power of any non-oil based product. Among the soft surfaces to which CrystalGel will adhere are styrofoam, ethafoam and, of course, muslin and fabrics. Among the more rigid surfaces to which CrystalGel will adhere are metals, glass, plastics, wood, Luan and fiberboard. It is particularly effective in adhering to plexiglass without hardening off.
Rosco's FoamCoat is a non-toxic, water based coating for styrofoam and polystyrene foam, as well as other surfaces. It provides a hard, durable finish that resists chipping and cracking, yet can be sanded smooth or carved to add detailing. FoamCoat can be used on a wide variety of surfaces including foam, primed wood, concrete block, primed fiberglass, paper maché, muslin and many other materials. FoamCoat is fully compatible with all Rosco paints used either as tints or as surface coatings. FoamCoat is inherently flame retardant and water resistant.
Beacon Adhesives, a family owned and operated business for over 75 years, owes its impressive growth and continued success to its current CEO, Milton (Mickey) Meshirer, who developed many of Beacon's innovative products both for industrial applications as well as for the craft market.
